More on consonants in standard Georgian

Bilabials b p p', dentals d t t' and velars g k k' are stops (occlusives). Pre-alveolars dz c c' and back-alveolars dzh ch ch' are affricates considered in the series of stops. Q' comes within the system of fricatives, though following fricative on-glide it is characterized by occlusion as well. On the syntagmatic level  (e. g., in harmonic complexes)  q' is found alongside the fricatives. By T. Uturgaidze's  classification q' is a fricative (spirant).

The place of articulation of n and l is not restricted. The nasality of the consonant n and the laterality of l in Georgian have proved to be sufficient features for opposing them to other consonants. T. Uturgaidze (1976) classifies n, l, and r as frontlinguals. They may be pronounced as dentals, frontalveolars and backalveolars without losing their distinctive features.
